Race/ for refugees

So I was doing a really great job of keeping this blog updated and then life happened. However, I have decided that it is now time to pick it back up. I have a number of friends who have been doing a wonderful job of updating their blogs and enjoy reading them. So while I am not sure if my life is as interesting as theirs, I would like to begin sharing  my life with you again.

As many of you know, I began working at World Relief Nashville in August. When I chose to become a social worker I really had no idea what that would mean for me. I knew that I wanted to help people and that I wanted to work within a Christian organization. I just didn't know what people group I would be helping or what organization I would be working for. During my senior year of college I was introduced to World Relief Nashville. I loved the work that they were doing and desperately wanted to be a part of it, the only problem was they didn't have a social worker on staff, which meant I couldn't do my internship there. I was devastated.

I kept World Relief on my radar, and when I began looking for jobs after grad school they were one of the first places that I applied to. I don't know that I really thought that I would get a job there. Its one of those places that you look at and think "Wow! That is an awesome organization, doing great things, it would be so cool to work there!" And normally you think that the people who work in those places as equally as cool as the organization, and honestly I just didn't think I was cool enough, haha. However, it appears that God thought I was cool enough!

I have enjoyed my first five months at World Relief more than I could have imagined. I started out my time there as a case worker, and I have now moved into the Health Navigator position. I have the privilege of teaching newly arrived refugees about the American health care system, helping them find the help that they need, and assisting the case workers in being able to find the best help for their clients. Each day my heart for the refugees that we are assisting grows more and more. Each refugee has a story and has gone through so much to be where they are today.

Due to my growing heart and passion for the refugees of Burma, Bhutan, Iraq, Iran, Somalia, Nepal, and other countries, I have decided to run the Country Music Half Marathon. This might come as a surprise to those of you who know me because I NOT a runner!! However, I have joined the World Relief Nashville team, Race/ for Refugees, and I believe that with their encouragement I am actually going to be able to do this. I will be honest with you, we had our first group "run" on Saturday and mine was more of a walk/run, but I did complete 3 miles! When I got to the end of the path my team was there patiently waiting for me, it was such a great feeling to know that even though it took me a little longer they weren't going to give up on me.

As a part of joining this team I have a goal to raise $1000 for World Relief Nashville. If you are interested in donating towards this cause please let me know and I will give you more information. I would LOVE to raise more than the $1000 goal. If you would like more information about World Relief and the work that we do I would love to talk to you about that as well! If you are also going to be running the Half Marathon and would love to join a wonderful team, I have one for you!!

My goal is to keep you updated about my progress through this blog and let you be a part of the journey with me. I am positive that there are many things that God will reveal to me through this time. I am going to be doing some pretty long runs, and I am sure that God will be speaking to me during that time. So pray that God will speak to me and that I will be listening and not paying attention to the pain. Also, while you're praying remember that I am an asthmatic running 13.1 miles, if i can do it anyone can do it!!

This was Ashley and me "running" the 2010 breast cancer 5K.

This is Lauren and me before the 2011 breast cancer awareness 5K.
She will also be running the Marathon with me. Don't let my "run"
shirt fool you, I only walked

Since I am showing breast cancer walk photos
I thought I should show the survivor!! I'm
working on getting her to run!!
